Prefer to keep your feet firmly on the ground? There is plenty of land based activities to keep you busy, whatever time of the year it may be.

Nature Walks: Take a nature trail through the lush mangroves and stop at the thatched summer hut hidden in their midst for some rest and relaxation or even a picnic meal.

Cycling: Take a bike out to explore the nearby fishing village of Thihaliya, with its thatched roof huts, mosques, churches, and wayside shops and stalls. Do watch out for the herds of wild donkeys that are common in this area.

Horse Safaris: Discover the unique thrill of exploring your surroundings on horseback. Take a ride on the Dutch Bay or unspoilt jungles by isolated beaches with magnificent views of both the sea and the lagoon; and the scattered fishing villages.

Horse Safaris at Ruwala Resort:  (All year round)

The Horse Safaris we offer are conducted by The Premadasa Riding School – the only specialists in Riding Safaris in Sri Lanka. They have a long reputation for excellence with a committed staff and supremely trained stable of horses and ponies.

The horses are Marwari thoroughbred and cross breeds renowned for their versatility and endurance. An endearing breed, they were imported from Rajasthan, India solely for riding safaris. These majestic horses have amazing stamina in all terrains, adapting with ease to gallop on the golden sands of enabling the rider to fully experience the joy of riding in the high sand dunes on the beach.

The itinerary is as follows:

Arrive in Sri Lanka and travel to Kalpitiya: accommodation at Ruwala Resort.

Riding Day 1: Ride to historical St. Annes Church, Thalawila

During the evening you will be riding out across the golden beaches to the famous St. Anne’s Church at Thalawila. You can witness the rural life of the fishing folk as you ride along their villages. The varying landscape of the sloping sand dunes lets you experience all the joys of riding – from brisk canters, and quiet walks along the shore to spirited gallops. After a three hour ride, return to Ruwala Resort.

Riding Day 2: Ride to Dutch Bay, Kalpitiya

Rise early and meet the horses at the Kalpitiya beach. With the Indian Ocean to your left and the Kalpitiya Lagoon to your right, gallop along the Kalpitiya peninsula dotted with patches of jungle and arrive at the tip of Dutch Bay passing Keeramundal. Visit the historical Dutch Church and return to Kudawa for sea bath for the horses – and you, if you fancy a dip in the waves, and enjoy a picnic lunch. After lunch take a leisurely ride back to Ruwala Resort for an evening of well-earned relaxation.
